Councillor Mrs Penny Brown, the Mayor of the City of Salisbury, attended the ceremony along with around 130 others, including local Church leaders and members. During the ceremony the Mayor commented on the presence of the Church in the City and expressed her appreciation to its members, “On behalf of the City of Salisbury I would like to thank you for the role that the Mormons play within our community. I wish you every success with your new chapel, God bless you.”
The local congregation has anticipated this day for 25 years, from the time when the Church acquired the land in 1988. Without a building of their own, the congregation has rented meeting space in various buildings including a nightclub at the Red Lion Hotel in the centre of Salisbury. Church members currently meet in the South Wilts Grammar School.
Upon completion, the chapel will be used for Sunday worship services, weekday youth and adult activities, and community service in the Salisbury area. “This is a milestone in the history of the Church in Salisbury and we anticipate that the new chapel will bless the lives of the members and others,” said John Crew, President of the Poole area, which includes Salisbury and 7 other congregations in the Southwest of England.
