Bramley resident, Linda Appleby, of Ganners Way, has been nominated to the national board of trustees of one of the UK’s most active charities, Carers UK, which has more than 12,300 members.

As well as working within the NHS in Leeds, Linda has been the sole carer for her brother, Leslie, who has learning disabilities and mental health issues, since the death of their mother eight years ago. Now Linda will bring a wealth of experience and passion to the organisation that has been a strength and support to her during these years.
“Being a carer brings with it lots of ups and downs and although I enjoy seeing my brother’s confidence and self-esteem grow by helping him live independently, there is no support – financial or otherwise – so life can be very difficult. Without Carers UK, I would feel very isolated,” comments Linda. “It’s an honour to be elected to the board of trustees and I will work tirelessly to gain recognition and support for carers all over the country.”
With her knowledge of nursing and the NHS, Linda is now furthering the work of the charity by campaigning for a compulsory module to be added to the national nurse training. This would mean that students have to work alongside carers to better understand their needs and the valuable role they play. She also lectures nursing students at the University of Leeds about her carer experiences and how they can work well with carers.
Linda is married to David and has a daughter, Gemma. The family are active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and attend the congregation on Priesthorpe Road in Farsley. Linda’s church assignments include helping people research their family tree, as well as teaching scripture study classes to a 17-year old boy with autism.
“My faith, my family and the support that I have received from Carers UK has enabled me to care for my brother in the way that I do. I’m pleased that I can now be a support to others through furthering the work of the charity.”
