Peak time Channel 4 programme Double Your House for Half the Money featured an eager group of Mormon Helping Hands volunteers who came to the rescue of a Leicestershire couple struggling to complete a major building project.
The 17 September broadcast shows how a quick-witted plasterer on site, Chris Challenor, promised to push the work along after the builders had left, with the help of his fellow members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the Leicester area. Christian pledged, “We’ll get this finished!”
Home owner Steve Morley was overwhelmed with a sense of relief: “Our plasterer obviously knew what we were going through.
“He said, ‘I will get a load of volunteers here from his church and they’d give a day’s labour for free’, and I’m a grown man and I cried!
“So we’ve got all the volunteers painting, doing the garden, doing a list of jobs that need doing so we’re on target.”
Programme presenter Sarah Beeny described the volunteer army as “heaven-sent” who made light work of the remaining jobs, giving the project the boost it needed.
Double Your House for Half the Money aims to help people achieve their property dreams ‘without breaking the bank’. With an 8pm slot, this popular show is watched by 1.5 million viewers.
