VISBY, SWEDEN — Representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated in Sweden’s annual Almedalen Week (Almedalsveckan), which took place from 23 to 27 June 2025 in Visby on the island of Gotland.
As one of the most significant democratic forums in Scandinavia, Almedalen brings together thousands of people from across the country, including government leaders, non-profit organisations, academics and faith communities, for a week of dialogue, learning and collaboration.
As part of its contribution to this year’s event, the Church hosted an interfaith panel discussion entitled “Resilience Through Religion”. The panel featured a distinguished group of leaders: David Thurfjell, professor of religious studies; Karin Wiborn, respected church and interfaith leader; and Nadia Jebril, an experienced journalist. Together, they shared reflections on how faith in God can sustain individuals, families and communities in times of adversity.
“Religion remains a vital source of strength for many in society,” said Louis Herrey, the event moderator and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “This panel provided a meaningful space to listen to one another and to recognise the shared values that unite us.”
This marked the ninth year the Church has participated in and organised an interfaith event during Almedalen Week. Church representatives attended a variety of seminars, roundtable discussions and meetings, engaging with civil society leaders and fellow faith-based organisations on issues ranging from social cohesion to religious freedom.
Originally founded in the late 1960s as a local political gathering, Almedalen Week has grown into a cornerstone of Swedish public life, offering more than a thousand open events each year. The Church’s participation underscores its ongoing commitment to interfaith cooperation and to promoting respectful dialogue within society.
“Almedalen Week is a remarkable expression of civic responsibility,” said Daniel Palm, Church Communications Director in Sweden. “For the Church, it is a valuable opportunity to listen, share our faith and stand with others who are working to strengthen society. It reminds us that faith can be a unifying force to helping individuals, families and nations find common ground and greater purpose.”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to engage with national and local communities across Sweden through humanitarian service, interfaith collaboration and public outreach, all grounded in Christ’s call to love and serve one another.
