Leeds Youth Dress for Success

The youth strolled up the red carpet and onto the runway to show that modesty is always in style. Each congregation was given a traditionally tricky event to dress modestly for and was charged with putting together a five-minute show to demonstrate that even the Oscars, a wedding, a day at the beach, or the Olympics can be enjoyed in style without compromising standards.

The youth chose not only fashionable, modest outfits, but music, lights and choreography to showcase their beliefs. Head of the judging panel, Leeds Stake President Robert Dryden, commented: “The efforts of our youth were outstanding. It’s not easy keeping high standards in a world where there is pressure to throw away traditional values, but our young people proved that with a little imagination and flair, it’s possible to stand as a witness for what is right – and still be stylish.”

After comments from the judging panel, an entertaining compere and lots of cheering from the 200-strong crowd, the night finished with a viewing of President Monson’s recent film for Mormon Messages on keeping the Lord’s standards.

As well as having fun, the evening helped many of the youth commit to keeping the dress standards as outlined in For the Strength of the Youth.

Ruth Henson, one of the young women who participated, commented: “When we were given the task to dress modestly for a beach party I wondered how we could do it without looking like pioneers! We soon realised that you can dress fashionably and be obedient to the commandment to wear modest clothes and treat our bodies as temples.”
