Light the World Charities Honoured by MPs, Lords, and Diplomats at Westminster Reception

Members of Parliament, Peers, and diplomats gathered in the heart of Westminster on November 26th to celebrate the return of the Light the World Machines at a special reception to honour this year’s participating charities.

Parliamentarians joined global ambassadors to learn about the inspiring work of the featured charities and see first-hand the Machines in action, experiencing how simple and impactful it is to make a donation that changes lives.

An Innovative Way to Care for Those in Need

The Light the World Machines are interactive digital kiosks, but instead of buying snacks or drinks, visitors “purchase” items for people in need. Each machine features a range of donation options, from essentials like hygiene kits and school supplies to livestock and meals. With just a tap of a card, donors can instantly contribute to trusted charities, knowing that 100% of their donation goes directly to the cause.

Opening the reception, Jim Shannon MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for International Freedom of Religion or Belief, said:

“Galatians 6:2 teaches us to “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the Law of Christ”, the machines put that principle into action in a unique and very practical way… I find the partnership behind this effort especially commendable. It is a model of collaboration that strengthens communities and builds trust.”

The charities featured in the machines include organisations tackling hunger, homelessness, and providing refugee support, these include: FareShare, The Felix Project, Jesuit Refugee Service, Muslim Aid, ShelterBox, Under One Sky, Bags of Blessings, and Baby Basics.

Elder Kevin W. Pearson, General Authority Seventy and President of the Europe North Area, attended the event alongside his wife, Sister June Pearson. He commented:

“We are deeply grateful to the MPs, Peers, and diplomats who joined us and showed their support for the charities featured in this year’s Light the World Machines. It is a privilege to work alongside organisations that bring hope and relief to thousands.

“Light the World is about following the example of Jesus Christ: feeding the hungry, comforting the lonely, and showing kindness to all. This initiative gives each of us a simple way to share His light and make a real difference—one act of service at a time.”

Brendan O’Hara MP, who sits as a member of the APPG for International Freedom of Religion or Belief, praised the initiative as a creative and modern way to support those in need. He recalled that this digital approach captures the same spirit of a family tradition from his childhood, when his mother would purchase charitable gifts—such as livestock or shelter—to give on his behalf, ensuring that Christmas was about helping others as well as celebrating together.

Global Reach of Light the World

The reception also welcomed members of London’s diplomatic corps, including, H.E. Miguel Buendía, Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, as well as ambassadors and government representatives from 10 countries, including, Honduras, Mexico, Cuba, Malawi, and Indonesia. Their presence highlighted the global reach of the Light the World initiative, which this year features Machines in 21 countries, spanning six continents.

"To see leaders from so many backgrounds united in a spirit of service felt sacred to me,” said Daryl Watson, the UK Lead for Light the World. He continued: “I believe the Light the World Machines will help people feel closer to Christ this Christmas as they choose to lift someone else. I am also excited for the weeks ahead and the quiet miracles that will come from simple acts of giving.”

Throughout the evening, each of the participating charities were introduced to the gathered guests, interviewed about their work, and shared insights into their mission and their excitement at being featured in this year’s Light the World Machines.

Among the parliamentarians in attendance was Sam Rushworth MP. Reflecting on the event, he commented:

“It was inspiring to see so many community and interfaith leaders come together and celebrate these wonderful charities who make a real difference for those in need. The Light the World Machines are a simple yet powerful way for people to give back, and I’m proud to support an initiative that turns generosity into action. At a time when many are struggling, this campaign reminds us that compassion and service can unite us all.”

This year, Light the World Machines will be installed at Spitalfields Market in London (6–20 December) and Grand Central in Birmingham (1–21 December).
