British Baritone & Singer-Songwriter Fulfils Childhood Dream to Sing with The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square

Mitch Greengrass’s musical journey is filled with passion. When he received the email confirming his acceptance to sing with the Tabernacle Choir at the April 2024 General Conference for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he said, "I couldn’t believe it! I had always dreamed of singing with the Tabernacle Choir but never thought it would be possible, living in the UK." 

While serving his mission, Mitch received a strong prompting to pursue an education in music full time. After a year of musical preparation following his mission, he was accepted at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Having recently completed his education with First Class Honours in July 2023, studying both classical and popular vocal technique, he shares, "The reason I chose to study music was to share God's love with others. Singing is such a beautiful vehicle for connection."

Mitch recalls his first performance, "I put off performing for a while, because I was terrified!" After a great deal of encouragement from his vocal teacher, Theresa McGowan, young Mitch took to the stage for the first time at age 11 to perform ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Misérables. He recalls, "After the performance, I looked up and saw many of the audience members were visibly moved. I had felt the emotion of the song, and they had felt it too. It was an incredible feeling! Since then, I have tried to use my gift to move and lift audiences, no matter what musical style I perform." 

In addition to performing as a soloist, Mitch has written several songs. One of these songs was used when he served as a missionary in Cape Town, South Africa to share the gospel in a particularly unusual way. 

He recounts his experience of working with a less active member in Kwanobuhle, South Africa.  Mitch Greengrass and Kayden Smith (a gifted pianist and fellow missionary) arranged and recorded the song ‘Raise Your Sail’ with the help of this musical member, which was later released on Spotify in 2019. "Having the opportunity to work so closely with this producer to create music about our faith was a profoundly uplifting and unifying spiritual experience for all of us."  Mitch shares, "it is still one of my favourite songs because its creation was so meaningful and spirit lead."

A large part of Mitch’s musical career is spent mentoring, tutoring and coaching other singers. "I love to teach," he says. He works extensively in local schools and has built a respected studio of private students, inspiring them to develop their instrument. "I teach students to use their voices to communicate their truth, their faith and belief."

Mitch grew up in Dorset, England with an older sister and younger brother.  Although none of his immediate family were particularly musical, he was inspired by his older sister to take voice lessons with her teacher. Mitch attributes much of his creativity to his mother. "She is a talented artist and can make almost anything with her hands." Although not musical himself, Mitch’s dad was a keen and stalwart supporter throughout his early musical career. "My dad recorded every one of my performances," he chuckled. "He has a carefully organised digital folder including performances from the last 15 years!" Mitch spoke of Hannah, his wife, "She has been incredibly supportive since day one. She loves when I sing, always encouraging me to push myself musically."

Speaking of his experiences with the Tabernacle Choir, he shares, "I grew up listening to the Choir in my home, especially during General Conference weekend or when I was spiritually preparing myself for the Sabbath." When Mitch took a trip to Salt Lake City in 2015, he visited Temple Square. While there he heard the Tabernacle Orchestra at Temple Square rehearsing. “It was heavenly! It had always been a dream to sing with the Choir because to me, it is the home of spiritual music, but I had no idea how I would be able to fulfil this goal."
