The Sixth Selsdon Half-Marathon took place on Saturday March 21st, hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and started and finished from the Selsdon LDS chapel at 2-4 Selsdon Park Road, Selsdon, Surrey. Runners came from all over the country to take part in this unusually challenging event, challenging because of the hilly terrain.
Ninety nine runners made their way round the circular route that took them through parts of South Croydon, Sanderstead and Selsdon. Some 60 of these runners were not members of the Church, many returning year after year to take part.
After the costs of holding the event were covered, the remaining proceeds, £750, were distributed between the two charities supported by the Selsdon Half Marathon and the Selsdon congregation – the ‘South East Cancer Help Centre’ and ‘Reach the Children’.
Some comments from some of Saturday’s runners include:
“Let me congratulate you on a superb event. This was my first half marathon and I really enjoyed it.” Steve Blake
“Thanks for the excellent organisation of the Selsdon Half. And this year was won in a cracking time! It is a very enjoyable run. Please, please, please pass on my thanks to all the marshals who gave up their time and supplied so much encouragement to each of the runners. Many thanks.” Newton Johnstone
The winner, Kevin Quinn, set a new course record of 1 hour 12 minutes - a full 11 minutes faster than the previous record. The fastest lady was Lucy Tigue.
