Farnborough’s Foodbank Donation

Over 250kg of food have been donated to the Farnborough foodbank, provided by the Farnborough Ward.

The donation supplied by the members accumulating to hundreds of pounds, is the single largest amount of food donated in the charity’s 3 year history, leaving the joint project managers, Mick and Susan Shea considerably overwhelmed.

The foodbank at St Christopher’s Church, Farnborough, is part of 106 facilities up and down the country that distribute food on behalf of the national charity ‘The Trussell Trust’.  The charity aims to provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK, with donations from the local community.

The congregation embraced the service project by donating a few tins each week over a full month.  It was a service project that the young and old could all participate in.  During family home evenings children were taught the importance of giving, being thankful and the useful skill of budgeting weekly food bills.

Sid Sayers, Farnborough’s High Priest Group Leader delivered the food to the charity and said, “Over the past few weeks we all pulled together putting a few extra items into the shopping basket to help people in the local area during these tough economic times.”

The foodbank is experiencing record numbers and is open every Monday and Thursday afternoon where individuals or families in desperate need for help can obtain vouchers from various controlled organisations to go and collect some food.

The charity will readily receive with grateful arms any donations of non-perishable food stock and urgently require UHT and powdered milk along with tinned tomatoes and vegetables. Bishop Rushforth concluded, “I was delighted that in a time when purse strings are tightened, the congregation gave willingly. We are pleased to be able to help those, who through whatever circumstances, find themselves in difficult times.”
